Open Educational Resources and Lifelong Learning:
Opportunities and challenges for Higher Education Institutions and Libraries

15 March 2019, Book Tower, National Library of Greece, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

About

Lifelong Learning (LLL) is a priority of educational policies in the 21st century, as a response to the major challenges faced by Europe (digital society, new professional skills, demographic changes, global competition, financial crisis). At the same time, the 4th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of the UN Agenda 2030 aims to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all".

Open Education (AE) contributes effectively to the implementation of the above mentioned policies, through Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP). With regard to OER, distance teaching institutions can take advantage of their specific characteristics, in order to bridge the gap between Non-formal, Informal and Formal education. At the same time, OER can be used by educators in their effort to improve the overall quality of teaching/learning.

This meeting will focus on the role that Higher Education Institutions and Libraries are called to play in LLL, particularly through the development and use of OER. The program will start with an introduction to the framework and the objectives of the event, followed by two keynote speakers that are experts in the field of Open Education/Science globally and a brief (skype) intervention by a EUA officer. After a break, cases and best practices on the support of LLL by academic and public libraries in Greece and worldwide will be presented. The next session will be devoted to specific actions and projects towards developing and offering Open Educational Resources (open academic textbooks and e-courses) in Greece. Other Open Education and LLL actions will also be reviewed. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion on all the subjects presented.

The meeting is being held within the general framework of the Athens 2018 World project.

You are welcome to join and actively participate!
