Open Courses in the Greek Universities: open knowledge available to all
L. Merakos, UoA Professor / GUnet President / Scientific Coordinator of Open Courses
In 2012, within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Program of the Ministry of Education, a national initiative was launched to enable Greek universities to open up the wealth of knowledge taught within their programs to the broader public sphere, freely offering a significant part of their courses through the Internet.
The collection of digital open courses created by this action, which currently includes more than 4,000 courses, is freely accessible via the national portal for "Open Academic Courses" (opencourses.gr), developed and supported by the Greek Academic Network - GUnet (project.opencourses.gr).
The courses created are similar to those taught in the undergraduate and graduate curricula of the participating institutions, and their content is organized in a way that facilitates self-study.
The results of the action of open academic courses, the experience gained from their implementation, and the ways of future expansion and exploitation of this important effort by the Greek academic community are presented.
